Alone Against the Frost is a solo horror adventure for one player, set during a research expedition to Canada’s Northwest Territories during the 1920s. Here, you choose your own path as you navigate through the story-your choices will determine whether you find success or failure!
L. C. Nadelmann, an anthropologist from the renowned Miskatonic University in Arkham, MA. Accompanied by three of your most gifted and practical graduate students, as well as an experienced local guide, you set off into the fabled valley of the North Hanninah in search of the anthropological discovery that will make your career and bring you fame. Or, so you hope.
• Bernard Ebstein, a cherubic-looking native New Yorker, eager to experience life in the wilds before his upcoming marriage to his sweetheart, Catherine.
Nadelmann, an academic obsessed by early North American prehistory, myths, and legends, particularly in the Big Woods region
• Sylvia Davidson, the latest in a long line of Boston Brahmins, destined for academic greatness thanks to her dedication and determination.
• Norman Falkner, a mature, largely self-taught student whose calm nature acts as a steadying influence on those around him.
But such a journey is fraught with difficulties, from dangerous white water to the superstitious beliefs of the region’s inhabitants-not to mention the wildlife!
Will you manage to survive every challenge this hostile environment throws at you? Will your companions? Can you return with your reputation-and your sanity-intact? Only time will tell.
Armed with a pencil, some roleplaying dice, and a copy of the Call of Cthulhu: Keeper Rulebook or the Call of Cthulhu Starter Set, you are ready to brave the remote wilderness as one of MU’s youngest ever professors. Dare you take on the challenge? If the answer is yes, then don’t forget to wrap up warm. It can get mighty cold out there.
The adventure makes suggestions as to what the doctor’s field work relates to
Originally released over 30 years ago, this new edition of Alone Against the Frost has been completely revised and updated for Call of Cthulhu 7th edition-over 650 entries, complete with new illustrations and an afterword by the original author.
What you get: Your USD 19,99 or equivalent will buy you both the 120-page, black and white softcover Alone Against The Frost, a solo adventure for the Call of Cthulhu 7th edition gameline, as well as its 122-page pdf edition. The product is a remake of Alone Against the Wendigo, a 1985 adventure published by Chaosium during the previous millennium.
This is not the first solo adventure Chaosium publishes. We have already visited together the free to download Alonge Against The Flames, as well as Alonge Against The Dark.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have never played Alone Against the Wendigo. Thus I cannot meaningfully compare the present edition of Alone Against the Dark to its previous one.
Spoiler warning: even though I will not lay down the adventure’s plot, I will discuss some of its strong and less strong points. If you wish to play this adventure yourself, stop reading now.
Contents: The present solo adventure is a 654-entry adventure in the style of the adventure books of yore. One entry inspect site leads to another, mostly linearly, sometimes like a tree extending its branches. The player has five expedition members at his disposal, and may use the stats of any one of them when making cheks of any kind (provided they are alive and conscious, of course) All five investigators are fully-fleshed, even though the spotlight falls on Dr L. C. Nadelmann. The good doctor can be either male or female, and is only half-concluded. The player can customize him (or her) as he wishes, with a sound 180 personal interest skill points. The doctor is the only character that can lose sanity. It is also the only character whose death signals the adventure’s immediate failed resolution. The other characters may die, and things will become harder, yet the adventure can at least proceed.
